I was General Manager HR and Administration at Gold Developers Pvt Ltd, Gurgaon, from 2007-2008, where I had an “HR Manager” in my team. I am using that experience to write a profile for ex-soldiers who want to take up a job as an HR Manager. How suited are Ex-Soldiers to an HR Manager’s Role? HR is an ideal function for ex-Defence Forces personnel. Many HR and Admin tasks soldiers perform during service align well with HR roles in the civilian world. An ex-soldier is suited for the position of HR Manager because: HR is a very process-oriented job; soldiers know how to create, follow, and implement SOPs. HR Managers must be timely and disciplined; soldiers exemplify these traits. HR requires good planning and training capabilities; soldiers are often good trainers. HR works closely with top management; soldiers are accustomed to working with higher authorities. However, there are new capabilities that an ex-soldier must develop: HR requires knowledge of processes like Recruitment, Onboarding, Payroll management, Industrial Relations, and more. Understanding standards like ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 is crucial. Familiarity with ERPs/HRIS software is necessary. HR must balance employee welfare with management directives. HR professionals must maintain composure and not react emotionally to situations. Networking is essential for hiring the right candidates. The HR Manager’s Role and Responsibilities Human resources (HR) is responsible for finding, screening, recruiting, and training job applicants, as well as administering employee-benefit programs. The HR Job Responsibilities: Managerial: Develop and integrate HR strategies aligned with corporate goals. Support units in enhancing leadership capabilities. Act as a catalyst for cultural and organizational transformation. Ensure a performance-based remuneration culture. Create a proactive Industrial relations culture. Implement the organization’s Code of Conduct and value systems. Provide inputs for HR aspects in organizational growth. Assist in career and succession planning strategies. Help develop state-of-the-art HR systems and practices. Drive internal communication channels. Continuously assess organizational issues for improvement. Operational: Interact daily with HR Head, CEO, and functional heads on manpower planning and development. Serve as an HR functional head for other HR Managers. Implement Employee Satisfaction surveys and follow up on action plans. Rationalize manpower utilization and conduct rightsizing activities. Initiate interventions for organizational and leadership development. Assist in developing Reward and Recognition programs. Participate in career development planning. Ensure compliance with all HR aspects for corporate governance. Coordinate consulting studies related to HR functions. HR Skills: General Skills Required: Strong communication skills. Strong ethics and conflict management skills. Organizational skills. Other HR Soft Skills: Good people management and interpersonal skills. Listening and questioning skills. Proficiency in tech tools like Word, PowerPoint, Excel. Qualifications and Certifications Needed: MBA/PGD in HR. Certifications in Human Resource Management. The work in HR is process-oriented, focusing on priorities like recruitment, appraisals, and employee training. Salaries for HR Managers vary based on organization size, with MSMEs offering between 3.5 to 7 lakhs per year, while larger companies can offer significantly higher salaries. How to Get Hired as an HR Manager: Barriers to getting hired include perceptions of rigidity, lack of experience, and lack of references. To overcome these barriers, ex-soldiers should: Obtain HR qualifications and certifications. Gain experience through internships or entry-level positions. Network with HR professionals and create a powerful resume and LinkedIn profile.
